Welcome! This guide walks you through every step needed to download, install, and activate the WooCommerce App plugin on your WordPress website. Even if you have never installed a plugin before, you can follow these steps easily – written in plain, simple language just for you.
Required Plugin – WooCommerce
Before installing the WooCommerce App plugin, you must first have WooCommerce installed and active on your WordPress site. This plugin will not work without WooCommerce.
WooCommerce is the world’s most popular free eCommerce plugin for WordPress. It turns your website into a fully functional online store. The WooCommerce App plugin builds on top of WooCommerce to add a fast, mobile-first shopping experience at yoursite.com/app.
Without WooCommerce, this plugin cannot run. If you try to activate WooCommerce App without WooCommerce installed, you will see a warning message and the plugin will not work.
How to Install WooCommerce First
1. Go to Plugins → Add New in your WordPress admin
In the left sidebar of your WordPress dashboard, click Plugins, then click Add New.
2. Search for "WooCommerce"
In the search box at the top right, type WooCommerce. The official plugin by Automattic will appear as the first result – it has millions of active installations.
3. Click "Install Now" then "Activate"
Click Install Now, wait for it to finish, then click Activate. Follow the WooCommerce setup wizard to configure your store basics (currency, payment, shipping). Once done, you are ready to install the WooCommerce App plugin.

Already have WooCommerce? Great – you are ready to proceed to Step 1 below.
Step 1 – Download the Latest Copy of the Plugin
The first thing you need to do is get the plugin file onto your computer. You will download a ZIP file – think of it like downloading any document from the internet and saving it to your desktop.
1. Go to your plugin source or purchase page
Visit the official website, marketplace, or download page where you obtained the WooCommerce App plugin. Log in to your account if required to access the download.
2. Click the "Download" button
Look for a button labelled “Download” , “Get Latest Version”, or “Download ZIP”. Always choose the newest version available – it contains the latest features and security improvements.
3. Save the ZIP file to your computer
Your browser will save a file named something like woocommerce-app.zip. Save it somewhere easy to find – your Desktop or Downloads folder works perfectly. Important: Do NOT unzip or extract this file – WordPress needs the ZIP file as-is.
Step 2 – Upload the Plugin to Your Website
Now you need to send that ZIP file from your computer to your WordPress website. This is done directly from inside your WordPress admin – no extra software needed.
1. Log in to your WordPress Admin panel
Open your web browser and go to your website address followed by /wp-admin. For example: www.yourstore.com/wp-admin. Enter your username and password, then click Log In.
2. Go to Plugins → Add New
In the dark left-hand menu on the WordPress dashboard, click Plugins. A sub-menu appears – click Add New.
3. Click "Upload Plugin"
Near the top left of the page you will see a button labelled “Upload Plugin”. Click it. A file-upload area will expand below the button.
4. Choose your ZIP file
Click the “Choose File” button and navigate to where you saved the plugin ZIP file (Desktop or Downloads folder). Select woocommerce-app.zip and click Open.
5. Click "Install Now"
After selecting the file, click the blue “Install Now” button. WordPress will upload and install the plugin automatically. Wait for the screen to show “Plugin installed successfully.”
Step 3 – Activate the Plugin
Installing a plugin is not enough on its own – you must also activate it. Think of it like installing an app on your phone and then opening it for the first time to turn it on.
1. Click "Activate Plugin" right after installation
After a successful installation, you will see an “Activate Plugin” link on the success screen. Click it immediately – this is the fastest way to activate.
2. OR go to Plugins → Installed Plugins
If you missed the activation link, go to Plugins → Installed Plugins in the WordPress admin menu. Scroll down to find “WooCommerce App” in the list. Click the “Activate” link that appears below its name.
3. Confirm it is active
Once activated, the plugin row will be highlighted in blue and you will see a success notice at the top of the page. Your mobile store at /app is now live.
WordPress does not need a restart. The plugin activates instantly – your store stays online the whole time. No service restart, no downtime.
Step 4 – No Special Mode Required
WordPress does not require you to turn on any “Developer Mode” or “Debug Mode” to use this plugin. It works immediately after activation for all regular store tasks.
Good to know: WordPress Debug Mode is only needed by developers when fixing technical errors. As a store owner, you do not need it. This step requires no action from you – simply continue to Step 5.
Step 5 – Find the Plugin in Your Admin Menu
After activation, the WooCommerce App plugin adds its own settings pages inside the WooCommerce menu in your WordPress admin – right alongside other WooCommerce tools like Orders and Products.
Where to look: In the WordPress admin left sidebar, click on WooCommerce. In the sub-menu that appears, you will find “App” and “App settings” – these are the WooCommerce App plugin’s settings pages.
1. Click WooCommerce in the left sidebar
In your WordPress admin dashboard, scroll down the dark left menu until you see WooCommerce. Click on it to expand the sub-menu.
2. Look for "App settings" in the WooCommerce sub-menu
Inside the WooCommerce sub-menu, you will see a new item called “App settings”. Click it to open the WooCommerce App control panel – your hub for all app settings.
3. Explore the settings hub
The App settings hub shows you quick links to all configuration areas: Home Layout, Theme & Colors, Shop Grid, and Access Settings. You will learn about each in the following chapters.
Step 6 – Activate the /app URL (Flush Permalinks)
After the plugin activates, you need to do one small technical step to make the /app URL work on your website. This is called “flushing permalinks” – it simply tells WordPress about the new /app address the plugin created.
1. Go to Settings → Permalinks
In the WordPress admin left menu, click Settings, then click Permalinks.
2. Click "Save Changes" without changing anything
You do not need to change any settings on this page. Simply scroll down and click the “Save Changes” button. This refreshes WordPress’s URL rules and makes /app work correctly.
3. Visit your /app URL
Open a new browser tab and go to https://yoursite.com/app. You should see your mobile store home screen. If you see a 404 “page not found” error, repeat this step – it almost always fixes it.
If /app shows a 404 error, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes again. This is the most common fix and solves the issue almost every time.
Step 7 – Your App is Ready with Default Settings
As soon as the plugin is active and permalinks are flushed, your mobile store is live and working with a set of sensible default settings. No extra configuration is needed to see it running.

All default settings can be customized using the App settings under WooCommerce. See the following chapters for detailed guides on each setting area.
Step 8 – Check User Access & Permissions
By default, the Administrator role has full access to all WooCommerce App settings. If you have team members (such as a Shop Manager) who also need to manage the app settings, make sure they have the right WordPress role.
1. Go to Users → All Users
In the WordPress left menu, click Users, then click All Users to see all accounts on your site.
2. Check each team member's role
Each user has a Role shown in the list. Recommended roles for managing app settings:
- Administrator – Full access to all plugin settings and WooCommerce.
- Shop Manager – WooCommerce’s built-in role; can manage products, orders, and most app settings.
- Editor / Author / Subscriber – These roles cannot access plugin settings.
3. Update a user's role if needed
Click on a user’s name to edit their profile. Scroll to find the Role dropdown. Change it to Shop Manager for a trusted team member, then click Update User.
Be careful with Administrator access. Only give Administrator role to people you fully trust – it gives complete control over your website. Shop Manager is safer for most team members.
Step 9 – Refresh & Verify Everything Works
The final step is to refresh your browser and confirm that everything is set up correctly. This takes less than two minutes and ensures your mobile store is working perfectly before you share it with customers.
1. Refresh the WordPress admin page
Press F5 (or Ctrl+R on Windows /Cmd+R on Mac) to fully refresh your browser. This ensures the latest plugin state is loaded.
2. Check that "App" appears under WooCommerce
Look at the left admin sidebar. Click WooCommerce to expand it. You should see “App” and “App Guide” in the sub-menu. If they are visible, the plugin is active and working.
3. Visit yoursite.com/app in a new tab
Open a new browser tab and go to your website address followed by /app. For example: https://myshop.com/app. You should see a clean, mobile-friendly home screen listing your WordPress pages and WooCommerce shortcuts.
Test the key screens
Check each section works correctly
/app/shop– shows your products in a grid/app/cart– shows your WooCommerce cart/app/checkout– shows the checkout form/app/my-account– shows the login/account page
Congratulations! Your WooCommerce App plugin is fully installed and your mobile store is live. Continue to Home Hub to start customizing your app’s homepage.
Helpful Tips
- Always install and activate WooCommerce first before this plugin – the App plugin cannot run without it.
- Keep the plugin file as a ZIP file when uploading – do not extract it. WordPress extracts it automatically.
- If
/appshows a 404 error after activation, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes – this almost always fixes it immediately. - Test on an actual mobile phone after setup – open
yoursite.com/appon your phone to see how it looks for your customers. - Use Shop Manager role for team members – safer than Administrator while still allowing full WooCommerce access.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Installing without WooCommerce. You must have WooCommerce installed and active first. WooCommerce App will not work without it.
- Forgetting to flush permalinks. If /app gives a 404 error, go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes. This is the single most common issue after installation.
- Unzipping the plugin file before uploading. Upload the original ZIP file through the WordPress dashboard – do not extract it first.
- Not testing on mobile. The app is designed for mobile screens. Test on an actual phone to see the real experience your customers will have.
