Stack up to three grouping levels to see tasks by project, person, stage, and more.
Overview
Grouping organizes rows on the left side of the Gantt. Instead of one flat list of bars, you see sections like “Website Redesign” or “John Smith” with tasks nested underneath. You can combine up to three grouping levels – for example, Project → Assignee → Stage.
How It Works
The Group by panel sits on the right side of the facilities toolbar. Each level is a dropdown numbered 1, 2, or 3.
Common grouping options for tasks include:
- Project – default for the main Tasks Gantt
- Assignees – see who owns which bars
- Stage – group by workflow column (New, In Progress, Done)
- Parent Task – show sub-tasks under their parent
- Priority, State, Tags, Milestone – and other task fields
For the Projects Gantt, default grouping is by Project Manager. You can also group by customer, stage, company, and tags.
Click + to add another level, × to remove one, or Clear to reset all groupings.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Open the Tasks Gantt and find Group by on the right side of the toolbar.
- Level 1 is pre-filled (usually Project). Change the dropdown to another field if needed.
- Click + to add Level 2 – for example, Assignees.
- Optionally add Level 3 – for example, Stage.
- Each row on the left shows the group name and a badge with the task count.
- To start fresh, click Clear and pick new groupings.
- Shortcut: Open Project → Projects Gantt Planner → By Project for a one-click project grouping.

Field Explanations
Group Level 1
The main organizer. All tasks are first bucketed by this field. Choose what matters most for your current question – project, person, or stage.
Group Level 2
Sub-divides each Level 1 group. Example: within “Website Redesign,” see separate rows per assignee.
Group Level 3
Further refinement. Useful in large teams when you need Project → Person → Stage breakdown.
Project
The standard grouping for portfolio view. Each row label is a project name with its tasks’ bars on the right.
Assignees
Shows workload per person. Tasks with multiple assignees may appear in more than one assignee group.
Stage
Separates tasks by kanban stage. Helpful in stand-ups to focus on what’s “In Progress” versus “Done.”
Parent Task
Ideal for work breakdown structures – sub-tasks appear grouped under their parent task row.
Tips
- Turn on Graph Overlay when grouped – each row shows average progress as a mini bar in the sidebar.
- Don’t use all three levels unless you need them – too much nesting makes the chart tall and harder to read.
Common Mistakes
- Duplicate assignee rows Tasks with several assignees appear under each person – this is expected, not a bug.
- Grouping by the same field twice Each level should use a different field for meaningful hierarchy.
