Reschedule work by dragging bars or changing their length on the timeline.
Overview
The Gantt chart is interactive. You don’t need to open each task form to change dates – click a bar, drag it to a new week, or pull its edges to make the task longer or shorter. Changes save immediately to Planned Start and Planned End.
How It Works
Move (drag): Click the middle of a task bar, hold the mouse button, move left or right, and release. The whole bar shifts – start and end move together, keeping the same duration.
Resize: Hover near the left or right edge of a bar until the cursor changes. Drag the left edge to change the start date, or the right edge to change the end date.
After you drop the bar, Odoo saves the new dates. If you moved the end date, the task’s Deadline may update to match. The minimum bar length is one hour.
Click a bar (without dragging) to open the full task form for editing name, assignee, description, and more.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Open Projects Gantt Planner → Tasks and locate the task bar you want to change.
- To reschedule: Click and drag the bar horizontally to the desired dates. Release to save.
- To extend duration: Drag the right edge of the bar further to the right.
- To start earlier or later without changing length: Drag the left edge, then adjust the right edge if needed.
- Verify the change by opening the task – Planned Start, Planned End, and possibly Deadline should reflect your drag.
- Use New in the toolbar to create a task directly on the Gantt (if you have create rights).

Field Explanations
Planned Start
Moves when you drag the entire bar or pull the left handle. This is when work is now scheduled to begin.
Planned End
Moves when you drag the entire bar or pull the right handle. Defines when the task should finish on the timeline.
Deadline
After a drag-resize on the Gantt, the deadline often updates to the new planned end so your due date stays aligned with the chart.
Planned Duration (days)
Automatically recalculates when you resize. A longer bar means a longer duration in days.
Task Name
Displayed on each bar so you can identify work at a glance. Double-check you’re dragging the correct bar in busy rows.
Tips
- Zoom to Week or Day view before fine-tuning dates – it’s easier to land on the exact day.
- Turn on Duration in the toolbar to see how long each bar is without opening the task.
Common Mistakes
- Accidentally opening the form instead of dragging A quick click opens the task. Click, hold briefly, then move to drag.
- Rescheduling without checking dependencies Moving a task may break logical order with dependent tasks. Review dependency arrows after big moves.
- Dragging in month view for hour-level precision Switch to day or hour scales for sub-day scheduling.
